I LOVE silk and everything about it so silk features a lot in my embroidery.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.comBlogger75125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-47169119973822328432012-07-14T18:42:00.000+10:002012-07-14T18:42:08.029+10:00One less UFOI have had a significant stitching slump with a total lack of inspiration for quite some time. In an attempt to overcome this slump I pulled out my rather large box of un-finished objects, otherwise known as UFOs.<br />
<br />
A quick rummage through the box was almost enough to send me running away again. I persevered.<br />
There are some really lovely things in the box.<br />
There are some almost finished projects in the box.<br />
There are some projects which are no longer my taste as well as a few that just leave me wondering what on earth I was thinking...<br />
There are some that contain mistakes or have an issue to be resolved before they can progress.<br />
Some only need to be framed, some need me to acquire a ... in order to complete them.<br />
Some projects however had me patting them and wanting to get back into finishing them.<br />
<br />
I decided to pick out something simple and work on it. If I can get one or two satisfying completions then perhaps I will be on my way to overcoming my slump...<br />
<br />
Here is the first now completed project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpcigHmmS_tNA8Fae0qDTacUtDjyQsN1wV92FM7VRKQbXR8mbn98RSwDRERKPG5lrIKVM-ty8Z_PJhzuceHAHKzrNVRLIo7pRTV0B0153AnGLcUqWRiah4Zghj1tnx1SEdGnNd65k3kSQ/s1600/P1170727.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpcigHmmS_tNA8Fae0qDTacUtDjyQsN1wV92FM7VRKQbXR8mbn98RSwDRERKPG5lrIKVM-ty8Z_PJhzuceHAHKzrNVRLIo7pRTV0B0153AnGLcUqWRiah4Zghj1tnx1SEdGnNd65k3kSQ/s400/P1170727.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It is a 5 x 7" kit where all I had to do was follow the directions and fill in the blank patches with simple knots, satin stitch or lazy daisy stitches to complete. It was mostly done and another couple of hours of stitching in pleasant company saw it finished.<br />
<br />
The original kit doesn't have any silk ribbon in it. I substituted some of the threads for ribbon in order to add a little more interest to the project.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-52157266143007211132011-03-07T23:00:00.000+10:002011-03-07T23:00:58.041+10:00Found!This time last year I was learning to smock and was attending a group on a Tuesday morning. When I was most of the way through my first (and only) piece I lost it.<br />
The entire piece, little blue bag and all. Lost.<br />
I turned the house inside out in my search for the lost smocking to no avail.<br />
My smocking remained lost.<br />
Mid year I returned to work, we then packed up the house and moved. I didn't find it in the packing or the unpacking. <br />
We are now packing up to move house yet again. This afternoon as I packed my embroidery stuffs I found it!<br />
Yes it was in a box with some of my embroidery items. Not the ones where it belongs but even so I managed to miss it in all my searching previously. Yeah I know...<br />
I am so thrilled to have found my lost smocking. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU5Z6whDxG845tKSiMMnt8d01NbxCpLEUHYMzideMDDnYEE9I3U6g__p_gZbnPIsGbGrkSU0KhWYhRqVvABJQNb2I0G1K2_4ZFtbURZl_agCeAjnPbDKZrqZu1KrgXskG0XuNK0Klg-H4/s1600/embroidery+march+2011+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU5Z6whDxG845tKSiMMnt8d01NbxCpLEUHYMzideMDDnYEE9I3U6g__p_gZbnPIsGbGrkSU0KhWYhRqVvABJQNb2I0G1K2_4ZFtbURZl_agCeAjnPbDKZrqZu1KrgXskG0XuNK0Klg-H4/s320/embroidery+march+2011+002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Now all that remains is for me to actually complete it... but in order to turn it into a coat hanger cover, I must first remember what I actually have to do. <br />
BTW Jane, how goes it with your smocking for the geat <a href="http://dzines-makeminesilk.blogspot.com/2010/03/what-is-it.html">smock-off</a>? :)Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-19695374850716450682011-01-12T21:31:00.000+10:002011-01-12T21:31:10.398+10:00Damp but safe.The flood waters have peaked and receeded in our locality. Yesterday was a bit harrowing as the rain kept coming down and flood waters kept going up. Parts of our suburb were evacuated but we are high. Parts of the suburb where the bride and groom live were also being evacuated and we hurriedly made plans to accomodate two extras. Thankfully it was a little bit further over in their suburb too. <br />
<br />
We fared well and were all safe. <br />
<br />
We have been watching the news and seeing the devastation to other parts of our state where they have been much worse off. It has been quite distressing seeing the images and now hearing the stories as they are coming out. <br />
<br />
These two pics tell part of the story for our area:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgELN573ChvzdfhFEzxcOrJZBdudfoeSPokTGh9F3HbHqHhEUja6UJix7yKrnFLhjYILQkLn2mfBu48PPQAIOxckQ2Q6qtn8aqxqXc3HNgTSDBHgaBn9b9_ErV5bP1pGpsYvBqSmtav9uA/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+130.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgELN573ChvzdfhFEzxcOrJZBdudfoeSPokTGh9F3HbHqHhEUja6UJix7yKrnFLhjYILQkLn2mfBu48PPQAIOxckQ2Q6qtn8aqxqXc3HNgTSDBHgaBn9b9_ErV5bP1pGpsYvBqSmtav9uA/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+130.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>The toilet block above is in a lovely local park near the river. It was one of the possible locations for the wedding photos. This photo was taken as the water was coming up.<br />

Apparantly the water went over the roof and as you can see the back wall didn't stand up to the volume of water coming through.<br />

There are many projects gonig on and it isn't unusal for there to be 3,4 or 5 different preparation activities happening at the same time in various parts of the house and yard.<br />
<br />
For this particular tale we take a basket... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim3TCRoaj1srfXH1Sc-Ka0SZesc5R9y8urOwGgPQkGTHYhsnGUFwBtyMP2WrgXWxR5__UU4m2X8WuHjL_h_KJ3DZUZoj1liZkSSAiGle7z6FMlA5yvHpAacSSnu2iXTQmxWm9ZrUMpkco/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim3TCRoaj1srfXH1Sc-Ka0SZesc5R9y8urOwGgPQkGTHYhsnGUFwBtyMP2WrgXWxR5__UU4m2X8WuHjL_h_KJ3DZUZoj1liZkSSAiGle7z6FMlA5yvHpAacSSnu2iXTQmxWm9ZrUMpkco/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+008.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">evict the kitty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSkgKDOr1OVfTW8JpE8pXG7JZ4m_TqjD79lmBgmCZfsP0tG_I5jVfBoxXMziVprhBHYcMGysDqEfv6DEysb-Bto79fS81Pxza1l_gi54wxnAYv618pRUAtUzLpEBFLR5DBmjVAUToY600/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSkgKDOr1OVfTW8JpE8pXG7JZ4m_TqjD79lmBgmCZfsP0tG_I5jVfBoxXMziVprhBHYcMGysDqEfv6DEysb-Bto79fS81Pxza1l_gi54wxnAYv618pRUAtUzLpEBFLR5DBmjVAUToY600/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+013.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">sit back while two of my dearest friends get creative with the basket, ribbon and bling.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQiQ5KGa-Vt3yhSykA8VvSZJLSharzCtnkjPXbZmqFSZ3ZiftbXMtxsQNJE_z0n4hxuVVeMI-RaybZDq4LSE-3erAMh0DuJs3Su3NeV_yIm3xbkY_UEHvOGm9YOnqQL4Vjma2WTrmHLAs/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQiQ5KGa-Vt3yhSykA8VvSZJLSharzCtnkjPXbZmqFSZ3ZiftbXMtxsQNJE_z0n4hxuVVeMI-RaybZDq4LSE-3erAMh0DuJs3Su3NeV_yIm3xbkY_UEHvOGm9YOnqQL4Vjma2WTrmHLAs/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+018.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Enjoy the pretty result!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlNhe9OznKCJ7O08fXkJUV3wWgbiRUMchPhuqoJKZ1ZzY-2_BOooNL5pg92UfOPAeXavp1NOECCB51p3mXGBmC3gvdqWefppRLHw3NtyWUpgKj1ZowRBTi3VLpQe3hzKTpP4f0VDK5kAQ/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlNhe9OznKCJ7O08fXkJUV3wWgbiRUMchPhuqoJKZ1ZzY-2_BOooNL5pg92UfOPAeXavp1NOECCB51p3mXGBmC3gvdqWefppRLHw3NtyWUpgKj1ZowRBTi3VLpQe3hzKTpP4f0VDK5kAQ/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+150.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Evict the kitty again</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge8R0g2XslaNkGhhCabmSE_Z9TXfey13i044mNsrmUPkYEdfLkRK7ePGJ5sYIuoId8jnHTI1HT5-CRb0yOAlSS8fdkW7nXQeSQIhiEqdArYMDBHTxV8WIhUVBCucMT1Awh4ZDkPcrCpqQ/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge8R0g2XslaNkGhhCabmSE_Z9TXfey13i044mNsrmUPkYEdfLkRK7ePGJ5sYIuoId8jnHTI1HT5-CRb0yOAlSS8fdkW7nXQeSQIhiEqdArYMDBHTxV8WIhUVBCucMT1Awh4ZDkPcrCpqQ/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+025.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">15 y.o. daughter neatly and carefully aranges 200 silk fans in the basket.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

However it is full steam ahead in the wedding preparation department.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCe-figCFV399ZXLb0wCycNw1cmCyjkaY4yWKFS9uG9YdZbiO6V9vkhFmlX9J5bBD4vw6XbBPdPWgV-qwg77SydRZ9Eg8t7FbB029V-1coWI_Mxs_H-X1cNZniKyMGovaw8psKYieaX-M/s1600/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCe-figCFV399ZXLb0wCycNw1cmCyjkaY4yWKFS9uG9YdZbiO6V9vkhFmlX9J5bBD4vw6XbBPdPWgV-qwg77SydRZ9Eg8t7FbB029V-1coWI_Mxs_H-X1cNZniKyMGovaw8psKYieaX-M/s320/wedding+prep+Jan+2011+023.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Several hours of chatting and laughing with six of us sitting around the dining table armed with scissors, templates and multiple shades of pink and grey paper resulted in nearly 200 bird silhouettes. <br />

<br />
On the unexpected front was the necessary alterations to a pair of silver sandals. My youngest daughter is 15 years old and is 5'10" with size 11 feet! Silver sandals are required for the wedding and 'mean mummy' won't let her wear high heels like some of the older members of the wedding party. Of course finding silver sandals which are low heeled AND with the desired bling we could have one or the other but not both.<br />
Never fear, mum is here!<br />
take one pair of low sandals and add bling: both mum and 15 year old are happy.<br />

She has been finding adjusting to wearing this height a little more challanging than expected. But it is hard to admit the mum really does know best. :) </div>Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-54242931534791669762010-12-28T20:56:00.000+10:002010-12-28T20:56:55.488+10:00A Christmas Kick in the Right directionMy needles and thread have been conspicuously still for quite some time...<br />
well not totally still, I have put in many hours of beading on my daughter's wedding dress. I can't show it (yet) but it wasn't interesting stitching being rather repetitive 'though white and shiny.<br />
<br />
I have been battling with myself since I completed my big project and sort of slumped into a world mostly void of sharp, shiny pointed objects and lovely threads. Thanks to a friend and her friendly kick in the pants in the form of a christmas gift that is about to be rectified!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxXqbWsr8Bt9mNQkTM7lUHvpUHc67QhxBg7OL04rnJ1GvYQtiNzfbzHwjz4IX7R7xxcZgPA8HW81LSwBwZd7vNnjB7X_qAwIpMZTLygmfmCr8OtvAjyg28V_nCS1vHH3kRuzQvP2-DDRg/s1600/silk+threads+dec+2010+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxXqbWsr8Bt9mNQkTM7lUHvpUHc67QhxBg7OL04rnJ1GvYQtiNzfbzHwjz4IX7R7xxcZgPA8HW81LSwBwZd7vNnjB7X_qAwIpMZTLygmfmCr8OtvAjyg28V_nCS1vHH3kRuzQvP2-DDRg/s400/silk+threads+dec+2010+001.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>My friend Lib gave me a collection of silk threads ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYKWLYpEIWaxu5r2U2ELTxYsHxMqZ_fhiGxbR2mcmdk2kOf9xXNctEQiNj1GlRyVkN7kwLhJiaTbbHgfCMWGWTzt8r6JPckq1-m44pfbWSaUFCyapkJevie2GmUoy9wlarakJNuGKGz3I/s1600/silk+threads+dec+2010+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYKWLYpEIWaxu5r2U2ELTxYsHxMqZ_fhiGxbR2mcmdk2kOf9xXNctEQiNj1GlRyVkN7kwLhJiaTbbHgfCMWGWTzt8r6JPckq1-m44pfbWSaUFCyapkJevie2GmUoy9wlarakJNuGKGz3I/s400/silk+threads+dec+2010+003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>... and then she handed me an old piece of linen which had been her mothers. It features a Jacobean style motif which is very different to the average crinoline lady or pretty floral stamped linen doily. Jacobean embroidery was traditionally done with wool on linen... who says it can't be silk on linen?<br />
<br />
My creative juices are finally starting to flow and ideas on how to embelish the linen are popping into my head. It hasn't got to the point where I am dreaming it and waking up with a picture in my head begging to be intrpretted into stitched loveliness.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-18224834236165418562010-09-14T21:52:00.000+10:002010-09-14T21:52:13.630+10:00"A Perfect World" - FINISHED!Pinch me! Ouch. It is really done... and ahead of schedule. It was billed as an 18 month project which means that it is due to be done by November this year.<br />
<br />
What is even more remarkable is that it has been done during a very turbulent period where we have moved house twice, where I have battled mental and physical health issues and even as I write this we are packing to move yet again. <br />
<br />
So here it is...<br />
<br />

<br />
It has taken me quite a while to do this last bit as I have been doing lots of other things... like starting a new job with five weeks training making plans to move house - again.<br />
<br />
Panel 6 features Restio, Felicia amelloides, Strelitzia and butterfly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtvK-mLbZDyb8_2Dztrw9KS7HzDyH4BNCa2cxs3g-u_tFStOCm4Evr687RXw4mPV-IORyHQeRDuhLYwfHaBxLAZH1jaF3UXQP6mb6xAgwKrbUdH8o_vy9rIUaYBp8eNK2qsCVAXzDPNZE/s1600/embroidery+September+%2710+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtvK-mLbZDyb8_2Dztrw9KS7HzDyH4BNCa2cxs3g-u_tFStOCm4Evr687RXw4mPV-IORyHQeRDuhLYwfHaBxLAZH1jaF3UXQP6mb6xAgwKrbUdH8o_vy9rIUaYBp8eNK2qsCVAXzDPNZE/s400/embroidery+September+%2710+003.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Restio is the pale green flowering grass.</div><div style="text-align: center;">It was worked directly onto the background. the stems are whipped chain with lazy daisy ribbon for the flower pods and gold beads for the flowers. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFYQ2E4_wfSxJN4QZ8JR0qth-CipcnF_SYWwwU-X5PDR-VyALiXsoBRC88gSf8N9N3DkpHH914QMwz7C1LcfJxoobB60bSn4TIYMpzQilmgXThJb7K0jS5xqmqLLr-Z7YXzKJo3SCs_v8/s1600/embroidery+September+%2710+009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFYQ2E4_wfSxJN4QZ8JR0qth-CipcnF_SYWwwU-X5PDR-VyALiXsoBRC88gSf8N9N3DkpHH914QMwz7C1LcfJxoobB60bSn4TIYMpzQilmgXThJb7K0jS5xqmqLLr-Z7YXzKJo3SCs_v8/s400/embroidery+September+%2710+009.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> Paris Daisy is the common name for the Felicia amelloides.</div><div style="text-align: center;">It is a pretty little flower worked directly onto the main piece in 2mmsilk ribbon for tight ribbon stitch petals and single silk thread stems in whipped stem stitch. </div><div style="text-align: center;">It took me forwever to stitch the stems as I had to do it like a stab stitch. The petals of the strelitzia are all stitched separately using a form of stump work called Barbola. then it sat while I worked my way through the rest ofthe project.<br />
i was a bit afraid to cut them out and attach them. They aren't wired and rely on much thread in the stitching which is them drowned in fabric stiffener. it took me the longest time to coat all that beautiful embroidery in chemicals to stiffen it. I finally got past my jittets... basically just pushed myself and did it. <br />
The next challenge was to actually cut out the petals and attach them. This has been the hold up.<br />
<br />
It has taken me a few nights just to carefully cut out all the piecce and a few more nights to bend them into shape and attach them. <br />

No really. It's not a trick question. <br />
<br />
We were visiting my parents this weekend and my dad came to see where I was up to with my "A perfect World" project. I showed him and said I needed to borrow his soldering iron for the next part of my embroidery. The look on his face was priceless. I regretted not having my camera poised as the mix of surprise and incredulity resulted in a good laugh for my mum and I - I had already told her about using the soldering iron to melt the edges of the organza ribbon to prevent them fraying.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGYQyTrTyhB6eDkR4E59-dT6jDNrWviVMdJyBtXb4ZP7V4Ew6XXJN9ad3cwyx3S0TZms1z6WrGBMjzNoJVcvfNpPfVz6DJWbUq5hoGRqe78gawh5iOpUmgcSiy7O-2p4zMWHnQ5qBoZEQ/s1600/embroidery+August+%2710+057.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGYQyTrTyhB6eDkR4E59-dT6jDNrWviVMdJyBtXb4ZP7V4Ew6XXJN9ad3cwyx3S0TZms1z6WrGBMjzNoJVcvfNpPfVz6DJWbUq5hoGRqe78gawh5iOpUmgcSiy7O-2p4zMWHnQ5qBoZEQ/s400/embroidery+August+%2710+057.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>I used the soldering iron to melt the edges of the organza ribbon to prevent it from fraying.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWpA_LpbGXLfdarbOIzK8T1KZt_yHKFHTssjz_G28MyiRqnVEOt4tP7GS7-ouLssg0v97b8IeRQbuXQ413eGC7DcH2ErUP_oqeDTjlvHFhdknYF2Cy0o2e751ypmj7vyvlNGkqq2WqHHc/s1600/embroidery+August+%2710+048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWpA_LpbGXLfdarbOIzK8T1KZt_yHKFHTssjz_G28MyiRqnVEOt4tP7GS7-ouLssg0v97b8IeRQbuXQ413eGC7DcH2ErUP_oqeDTjlvHFhdknYF2Cy0o2e751ypmj7vyvlNGkqq2WqHHc/s400/embroidery+August+%2710+048.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>It was pretty neat. I learned a new technique for finishing ribbon and working with organza. The edges turned out really well and they don't fray. And it was a lot of fun.<br />

The petals are done in 13mm slk ribbon and then once in place a loose blanket stitch is done around the outside of most petals. It is meant to be a feature, but I haven't yet decided if I like it as a feature. The front five petals were done separately and attached last over the top of everything else. I need to go back and 'convince' the front petals to sit so they curve over the other way to make them look more rounded. </div><div style="text-align: center;">The many stamen were the trickiest part as they just wouldn't stay where I put them while I stitched them in place and added the next bunch. Just as well they weren't meant to all sit at the same height as I had no chance of making that happen.</div><br />
Wow with this one done I now am down to three panels to go, two of which I just have to attach in place as all the parts are already stitched. Yes I am counting down. :)Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-29063704426161324172010-07-29T11:22:00.001+10:002010-07-29T11:26:34.978+10:00panel 16 "A Perfect World"I'm on a roll now... completed another panel last night and here it is.<br />

At long last I get to show off another completed panel. It took me only half an hour to complete it at my hand-work group this morning - only had to attach the last two petals which I sititched yesterday on the train. I haven't been able to attend my hand-work group since I have been working, so I very much enjoyed the social morning of catching up with what has been happening in everyone's lives. <br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">There are three panels in this project that feature Leucadendrons. It does confirm for me that I much prefer pretty flowers to just unusual ones - give me a Rose or Pansy or Gerbera any day.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I have only got five panels to go and I am getting excited to be done. Of the five panels left, I have done most of the stitching for three of them and some of the stitching for the other two.</div>Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6434966912170259981.post-82759121056423488462010-07-25T22:05:00.000+10:002010-07-25T22:05:47.603+10:00Needle on a trainI have been travelling over two hours a day on a train five days a week. That means ten hours of sitting in one place with nothing to do except enjoy the opportunity to play with my needle and thread creativity to occupy me.<br />
<br />
Nope.<br />
<br />
I have been too tired to do much embroidery. Eight hours of staring at two computer screens leaves my eyes too sore and tired to do much of anything.<br />
<br />
It has taken me over 24 hours of train travel to produce just a small amount of embroidery.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsLVh-KMYlmg3mfdPmQBBNFNQ4iLREDjtlZ7rpiG6uBPWMJor-_N1PyO9YhGsipwR5ASKXmEWVCIJA4Q1vL5byC0C4BJq0icgRvmhr79I0NbiGXzTaOTPIHuULiJGE7W8iTcu0HMku41I/s1600/embroidery+July+%2710+064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsLVh-KMYlmg3mfdPmQBBNFNQ4iLREDjtlZ7rpiG6uBPWMJor-_N1PyO9YhGsipwR5ASKXmEWVCIJA4Q1vL5byC0C4BJq0icgRvmhr79I0NbiGXzTaOTPIHuULiJGE7W8iTcu0HMku41I/s400/embroidery+July+%2710+064.jpg" width="300" /></a></div> It's a runner for my sideboard all done by hand. Hubby was joking that it <i>only </i>had about 1000 hours work in it and mum said that he just may be close.<br />
<br />
It features a series of motifs joined by a flowing vine. Mum gave me a pile of patterns to look through and choose what I liked and then we designed a rough outline of wjjat it would be. I wanted to feature hearts and flowers wiht the doves and other traditional images included. I suggested the I like a mix of symetry and assymetry and drew the hearts and vines which mum used for the corner motifs. Then mum added lots of imagination with stithes and filling stitches. <br />
<br />
Check out the details.<br />

After some "encouragment" ie much pushing from me and mum's embroidery group who were in awe of her work, Mum entered it into the show and it won first prize in the pulled thread section.<br />

I had to use an enormous flanged needle to make the hole and then trying ot pull the 13mm silk through on the largest chenille needle in existense was still hard and painful going. I could only do a bit at a time cause my fingers got so sore. At the same time I had to keep pressure on the already stitched ribbon to prevent it accidentally getting pulled out of shape. Can you see the stamens? They were also tricky and painful and I had to use the same technique to get them through.<br />
<br />
I haven't mentioned that this project is done on a fine cotton fabric which has a print ironed onto it. I like the look of the print but not the feel. It gives the fabric a plasticy sort of coating fromthe iron on pic. The original is a watercolour painting whihc is then turned into prints for embroidery. I am sure that it is the most economical way in which to produce the image, but there has to be a 'nicer' way to get the result. The printy cost $60 au so even that isn't what i would call value. Then it is backed with a second piece of cotton fabric.<br />
<br />
All of this means that I have to stitch through two layers of cotton and an iron-on print. I am glad they are done and I have little desire to do them again.<br />

It didn't need much done to finish it - stitch and attach the wings for the bee and a couple of leaves. So why did I delay so long? ... no good reason other than I had moved on and got caught up in what I was doing. Going back is hard to do when the motivation has passed. I think that is where UFO's get their momentum. <br />
and now for the unveiling... <br />

Three friends and I were having a conversation about this issue over a cuppa and our hand work this morning. I am not sure we solved anything but we sure had a good time. <br />
<br />
One of the ladies was working on a fiddly x-stitch kit that had been given to her some years ago as a gift. It's not really her thing and she was lamenting that the back of her work isn't anything special. The front however looked lovely and we decided that none of us are purists who insist that the back be as beautiful as the front. We concluded that since it would be framed and only the framer would see the back it probably didn't matter too much... and that the framer probably could be paid off in order to keep the imperfect back a secret from the "back police". <br />
<br />
One of the other ladies said she knew nothing about the back supposed to be so neat when she first started stitching and was happily stitching away, working in small sections making her x-stitch master piece until someone came along and pointed out that her work was messy at the back. horror of horrors. she ended up putting it aside and didn't touch it again for some years - her confidence shattered by some busibody.<br />
<br />
My contribution was to offer two comments. If it couldn't be seen from the front and didn't affect the quality of the front or the way it sat, then it makes little difference... unless one was using such things as a measure of one's self-worth. That got a giggle from my companions.<br />
<br />
My second contribution was to show them the back of my ribbon and stumpwork masterpiece in progress... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivpc-BTItahNqcI5BaeMXf0zpoghDFs9Xbgf97HmwhDl3MlUN8w2LKAeJ8bCipc3yW9152bPI8gYxIZqL3QpYy_IzzgirGjxghTIkZqlunO9fCTo64m3jRPAz1k5tfPI0GHOOB5id75vI/s1600/embroidery+June+%2710+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivpc-BTItahNqcI5BaeMXf0zpoghDFs9Xbgf97HmwhDl3MlUN8w2LKAeJ8bCipc3yW9152bPI8gYxIZqL3QpYy_IzzgirGjxghTIkZqlunO9fCTo64m3jRPAz1k5tfPI0GHOOB5id75vI/s400/embroidery+June+%2710+006.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>...and to suggest that the x-stitch perfectionists might be horrified or even cured of their perfectonist ways by having a go at ribbon embroidery. That really got a giggle. The top leaf is wired so it can be raised and the bottom one isn't as it will sit flat on top of the fabric. The heart of the protea will be padded and mostly hidden - yeah I know it's crazy to put so much work into something that will hardly be seen... but what can I say.<br />
<br />
I am currently working on the petals for the protea. Each day starts with a cuppa and many cups of tea are consumed before my evening cuppa. I prefer to drink my tea out of a fine bone china cup and am quite drawn to the pretty.<br />
<br />
Imagine my double delight when I got an email telling me I had won and follower gift AND it was a tea themed set of pin cushion and tea towel.<br />
<br />
Each month Bev of <a href="http://www.flamingotoes.com/2010/06/june-follower-giveaway/comment-page-1/#comment-935">Flamingo Toes</a> has a give away for a random follower, just to say thanks for being my follower. I won for the month of June! What a lovely surprise.thanks HEAPS Bev. Go and visit her blog and check out all her great ideas. <br />

My friend L was trying to retrieve her yarn which was in a terible tangle due in the most part to one of her animals. L sitting on my couch and trying to untangle the yarn was just too good of an invitation for yet another animal...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4_nFrCw3PB5e-bgZ5OYBhppdLdLWx-7OMSH93A7NQW-qMP3HN81nV78_73619ZV7FXlgElYGWVlU1qce88TqcX6uX1P-_UilvlrPY6cSA_YzDSxiCzqrLhfAPH0DxWrIApDlW0jE9A0Y/s1600/embroidery+May+%2710+148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4_nFrCw3PB5e-bgZ5OYBhppdLdLWx-7OMSH93A7NQW-qMP3HN81nV78_73619ZV7FXlgElYGWVlU1qce88TqcX6uX1P-_UilvlrPY6cSA_YzDSxiCzqrLhfAPH0DxWrIApDlW0jE9A0Y/s400/embroidery+May+%2710+148.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Yes, the ever-present, ever searching for mischief Eddie was quick on the game. I am afraid it didn't improve; Eddie was not to be discouraged and the yarn condition didn't improve much either. <br />
<br />
Soon L gave up trying to rescue the yarn and enjoyed the game. I must say that playing with an animal is good for one's soul and it definately lightens the mood.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08894258034175095725noreply@blogger.com0
